Viking Long Ships were very important to the Vikings. Without them, the Vikings would not be able to plunder different towns and monasteries. It's how they got around back then! I want you to tell me about Viking Long Ships. Check out the links below and watch the video about Viking navigation. Then draw a picture of a Viking Long Ship and write a few sentences about it.

Did you know that Christopher Columbus was not the first one to discover America? Nearly 500 years earlier a man called Leif Erikson crossed the Atlantic Ocean aboard a Viking long ship! Leif was from Iceland and had heard of a merchant who had seen land off the coast of Greenland when his ship was blown off course. One day Leif's ship was blown off course and found himself near land he had not expected to see, it was Canada! He docked there and rescued two shipwrecked men who had been there for a while. He saw vineyards there and wheat growing. He went home and told everyone what he had seen. If this is to be believed then the two unknown shipwrecked men were the first known Europeans to step foot on North American soil. Below is a statue dedicated to Leif Erikson in Seattle, USA.
