If you look at the time line again, you can see that the Battle of Clontarf took place in 1014. At this point, Brian Ború was the High King of Ireland. Brian Ború wanted all the kingdoms of Ireland to come together and be ruled by one king (the high king, which was himself). The King of Leinster, Mael Mordha, decided he wanted to join the Vikings and they attacked County Meath. Meath asked for Brian Ború's help and so Brian and 4,900 men started to head straight for Dublin.
The King of Leinster and the Vikings had 7,000 men. Viking Long Boats began to arrive on the shore of Clontarf on the 23rd April 1014. Brian Ború's men beat the Vikings and the Vikings ran back to their long boats and fled!
While Brian knelt praying in his tent, the King of the Isle of Man crept up behind him and killed him. Brian was 84 years old at the Battle of Clontarf. The King of the Isle of Man was later captured by Brian's younger brother. Check out the newspaper below to see the main events of the battle.
